Don't you feel stupid when you do that and the worst thing is actually looking back to see what you might have tripped over knowing full well there was nothing there, I do that all the time, but its just a balancing act to get back into your stride again, I'm forever tripping up and can trip over my own shadow me, bet anyone walking at the back of me has a good old laugh.

It's partly the way we learned to walk as children and partly due to unconscious evolutionary remnants. Watch a child learning to walk and they speed up as they loose their balance foreward. And in nature being flat on your face is vulnerability, a sure sign that you're easy prey. Threr's probably a lot more to it, most "simple" things we do inately have many conscious and unconscious factors contributing to them.

probably coz when you trip you pick up some momentum so your legs have to compensate by moving a bit quicker for a couple of steps, otherwise you would actually fall over onto the ground and not just trip

Because our head (heaviest bit in an, if you ask me, silly place) would go forward over our centre of gravity, so a couple of quick steps bringing legs back into synch sorts this out. If we didn't, we'd fall. Go out on a weekend night on closing time and watch. :)

I thinks its to get away from the scene of embaressment as quickly as possible, then when you know you are safe, and not going to land on your face, you are calm collected, and can walk on pretending nothing happened

So that it looks deliberate in my case! People tend to stare less if you make it look like you are out having a jaunty walk! Lets face it, it's embarrasing!

Haha.......... yeah everyone does it - and then they scowl behind them at whatever they tripped on. If they fell over their own feet some people bang their foot as if its something wrong with the shoe.. We all do it :-)

It is just a natural reflex of your body to recover the balance and it prevents you from falling down.
