Grammatically speaking, it is fine. The punctuation, however, needs a slight adjustment.

How about this:

Dr. Drake's words that day, stopped me cold. "By the end of the year, everyone in this class will be creating masterpieces; from exquisite pottery pieces to beautiful lifelike portraits," he said.

Sentence doesn't have an "a" in it.
Work on that first... then we'll deal with the sentence itself.
