The 3% is brain and body development. Humans have learned to build houses with central heating, so we don't need fur, but chimps haven't.

Since humans were becoming smart, they would eventually figure out that someday they'll die. To compensate, the temporal lobe developed this thing called a 'God Module' that gives us the gift of imagination and the belief that there is some sort of God or afterlife. Atheists have less active God Modules. They can still have quite a bit of imagination, but they don't believe in God or an afterlife. The God Module also gives us reason. Trust me. Without it, we'd be throwing crap at each other, too. Chimps need to be smarter in order to have a God Module, 'cause then they, too, will find out that they'll die. That's about it

There is no God. Animals evolve. We are animals. The fact that chimps are 97%homologous to us is an act species evolution. we developed sentience the other animals didn't. Just because chimps are similar to humans genetically doesn't mean they act anything like humans or look anything like humans. Remember that your genes are only the instructions for life. The proteins that are made can be completely different. The environment affects these changes drammatically. And the species differences alone account for huge differences.

It's not them that's 97% human, it's their DNA. That means that their body makeup is 97% similar, not necessarily the way their brains work. And remember, one little change in DNA can make somebody mentally retarded or unable to live. 3% can mean a lot.
