Taking this one step at a time-
She will most likely have damaged the socket, now the only way to repair/replace the socket is to unsolder, remove and re solder a new socket in place. Given the cost of paying somebody to do that it actually would be cheaper to bin the motherboard and get a new one.
She has not returned the goods in the same condition that she bought them in. That is part of the sale of goods act. A certain amount of wear and tear is allowed for but I think shes gone past that.
A lot of companies sell computers with preinstalled software. What you will get with it is a recovery disc which only works on the same type of computer you bought.
I would suggest looking at buying another unit from a good company i.e. Novatech. They are doing very cheap good quality tower units for less than £250 including vat.
There are lots of people on eBay selling legitimate copies of xp on eBay for around £50. I wouldn't recommend using a pirate copy because the updates are needed for the new Internet explorer 7, and anyway theres too much hassle with pirate software.
Use the hard drive from the old computer as a second storage unit in the new one and you will still have all the data.
Any questions just ask.

If the socket on the motherboard is messed up then it will cost her more money to repair the motherboard then it would if she bought a new computer. If it is a connector that is messed up then all she has to do is replace that part.
As for the Xp question, Yes you will need a Windows XP disk to install XP on the new computer. It will be about $200 for a new version. This is why I highly recommend to everyone I know to go ahead and buy a computer that sends the actual Operating System Disk instead of those Recovery Disks.
If she wants she can buy a replacement motherboard for that model. But I think it would be cheaper for her to get a new computer. Brands that I do not recommend are HP and Compaq.
If she dose get a new computer I recomend she get the three year warranty. Stay away from the 2 and 1 year warranty a computer probably want break within that time frame.
If she had data that was on that drive she can retrive it by pluging it up to the new motherboard assuming it uses the same type connectors that it did on the old one.

OK then...
If it is just the motherboard that has gone, YOU HAVE NOT LOST ANY DATA! When you insert a new motherboard, you connect the current hard disk and all other components that was in your original PC.
If you get a new PC, you can either replace the hard disk, put your old hard disk with your new hard disk (old on is slave, take it to the shop) or the same, but the new hard disk as slave (take to shop if complete novice
You may also want to take the PC to a different shop before doing anything. It may not be actually broken, and may be able to be repaired (somewhere like PC World (UK)

Can't answer the 1st part about the motherboard but if she bought the pc with XP already on it, the supplier should have given her a cd she can use for backups etc. If she needs a new tower tell her to go back to the shop she bought the original XP from and get her copy of Xp they should have supplied in the 1st place.

This could happen, since the power connection on some motherboards is integrated into the motherboard.
If you can find a motherboard compatable with XP and her current hard drive,, she can install her old hard drive in the "new" computer. She may need to re-register XP with Microsoft.

what the hell she doing inside the pc?
if you know nothing about a pc's insides stay out of it the motherboard is the most expencive part of any pc.
and though they have the famouse hard drive the mother board is the heart of the pc!!!!
that's where everything runs off.
but if she gets it fixed at least she aint going to lose data as everything she has done is stored in the hard drive.
xp windows comes on a disk and is like puting any programme in your pc but it take ages to load up and you need the promo code thats the dear bit

only the socet is ripped unless she pulled it right off and ripped or cracked the motherboard.
you would have to get xp off of a disc or download it off the internet (using bittorrent or similar)
her data is still all on the hard drive which can be connected to the new motherboard if you get one. None will be lost
hope this helps

ones you change mother board on an windows XP computer has a bug in it so you can't change hard drive from one to other.that's why Bill Gates is milliner. no CD to reload better of gating a new tower.
