You want to know how they stick teflon on metal? Have I got the story for you.

Many years ago Cheyenne, WY was experiencing mysterious explosive booms that rattled windows, broke some, and were a real nuisance because no one knew where they were coming from. The Air Force said they didn't do it, United Airlines claimed they weren't responsible, and so on and so forth and they kept happening for over a month. Finally someone connected with the booms turned on a TV or read a paper and realized what they were doing underground ten miles away could be heard in town.

They were blasting teflon on to metal. They'd suspend the teflon sheet above the metal to be coated, then detonate dynamite to blow the teflon on to the metal. It would bond instantly.

This was being done underground, but somehow the noise of the explosion was getting out. They never did figure out how because they immediately suspended operations and found a more remote site.

Once the mystery was solved, everyone had a good laugh.

Because the teflon isn't "stuck" to the pan in the same way in which food sticks to a non-teflon-coated pan. The teflon is bonded to the aluminum pan (which in the case of stainless steel cookware, is further bonded to the stainless steel).

i don't know, but teflon is sooo bad for you, it is believed to be one of the causes of autism, plus it's just bad for you. it was an experimental accident, i don't remember all the gory details, but its one of those "fell in a pot of acid" type stories. i don't want those icky chemicals getting into MY dinner!
