First of all I don't understand why everyone is telling you to contact the child-support office. This question has nothing to do with child support. But on to the question....
If it was his weekend or whatever and he left the children unattended at his home then yes you could get him for abandoning them. But if he brought you the children and just went out of town without telling you he was going then no you can't get him for anything.
Consider putting them in daycare. Instead of depending on an unpredictable father to watch them.
As far as taking them out of state. You really need to talk to your lawyer about this. That would be up to the judge. And you don't want to piss the judge off before your court date.
You need to remember to try and be the best parent possible. DON'T talk negative about your children's father in front of them. They will figure everything out on there own, in time.
Good Luck & Contact your lawyer ASAP

First, he sounds like a dirty redneck and youre better off without him screwing up the lives of you and your children. Second, you need to contact child support enforcement so he doesnt get the idea that he can take off on you and pressure you to get back to him. Third, in the future you really need to take a close look at the people whom youre having relationships with because people tend to give signs about this stuff before it happens and it is putting a large strain on you and your family.

Why don't you take the day off from work? Do you know when he is coming home? You both need to know that you are parents now and your children come first. The young parenting of today is too selfish. Why don't you wait to see how long it takes him to come home? And call your lawyer. You can not be a parent if you are selfish. You need better communication.

You need to contact the child support enforcement bureau in your state, also go to the courthouse and ask how to file for a legal separation so that you can start collecting child support. Get reliable child care because it's over - he will never help you.

No, Just because you have something to do doesnt mean he has to plan around it. You legally took respondsibility for your children, so you are respondsible for them.
If you are a RN, you can afford a baby sitter.
You seem extremely one sided. Ive was raised by my mother only, So dont tell me I dont understand.

Well, he is obligated to pay child support now, and if not, you can file for him to be arrested for that. and his (and your) child will not respect him, but will look to you as twice the parent he is, alto you will also have twice the responsibility to.
