Iceland used to be one of the most civilised and modern countries in europe and now they've gone back to being a bloodstained, cold little island harpooning whales for what exactly. Scientific research like the Japanese claim? Commercially like the norwegians? Why do you think they've gone back in time? Please complain to their embassy, it might help.

I find this very upsetting. I see absolutely no need for ANY country to practice whaling in any form, commercial, scientific, or otherwise. Iceland and Norway don't need to slaughter whales for food. They can raise or import their food from a number of sources. Same goes for Japan. I doubt that either Iceland or Norway export any product that anyone in the U.S. finds useful, so a boycott probably wouldn't hurt them. Japan manufactures things that everyone uses, so I doubt that most people would participat in a boycott of Japanese products. I'm here in DC, so I'm checking to see if there are any pettitions currently circulating to go to the embassies.

Because I was hungry! Now common, the whales we are catching are NOT in danger to become extinct.

Can you tell me the difference between killing a whale or a cow? Or any other animal you eat?

Whale meat is actually very delicious and Iceland is still a very civilized and modern country. Whale meat is very popular in restaurants here, even with British and American tourists so you could say we are doing this for you.

This is not going back in time. There is plenty of those whales and if we don't catch them, they will eat all the cod in the sea ... then no food for the whales. It's just the law of nature, eat or be eaten. The whale is no different from other animal.

How can you say the whale is endangered? This was one of over 24.000 whales of this species around Iceland. It is NOT an endangered species, that is one of the many big understandings.

Icelandic policy on ocean issues is based on maintaining the future health, biodiversity and sustainability of the ocean surrounding Iceland, in order that it may continue to be a resource that supports and promotes the nation’s wellbeing. This involves conservation and management of the resources based on scientific knowledge and guided by respect for the marine ecosystem as a whole.

Abundance estimates for both minke and fin whales around Iceland have been approved both by the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Scientific Committee of the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO). Both have been deemed abundant.

The methods used for hunting the whales are the best available. No high-speed chase is involved and most of the animals die without realising that they are being hunted. Statistics from Norway, where the same methods are used, show that around 80% of the animals die instantly upon being hit. An overwhelming majority of the remaining 20% die within minutes. The methods used ensure that the catches are done in the quickest and most humane way possible and that suffering is minimised. In fact, these methods are more effective and humane than those used for hunting other large mammals, such as deer.

One whale will feed many people.
Why not complain about the slaughter of cows or how they are raised in filthy feed lots till they are killed? Or about how all the baby calves are slaughtered ? And have you ever seen how hogs are fattened up for market? They are each placed in an area just big enough for them to turn around or lay down, and as they grow they have less and less room this keeps the weight on them so they bring more money at the market. Not to mention The chicken farms along with the cows and pigs are probably the main source of e-coli as their manure is pumped directly onto crop fields for fertilizer.

One thing i think Harpooning Whales is wrong it`s just like killing a Tiger, Lion, Elephant, Gorrila Ect. For like Fur or meat i think that is 100% wrong Animals should get treated like us humans, How would Iceland like it if a whale came up and harpooned one of them! ><

And what happens when we harpoon to muh eh? They'll be like Tigers Endangered ><

P.s I dont eat Meat! I'm a veggie and proud of it!

Because people will pay money to eat it.

MONEY MONEY MONEY. "Paper made out of broken , twisted trees". That's why!

Most humans don't really care about animals - why should they? They care about only themselves and money.

I can't see how killing whales is different from killing chimps, cows, rabbits, sheep, peacocks or any other animal. If people want to do something then if they have money it will be done.

Personally I am disgusted by whaling, then again I am a vegetarian.
