Absolutely not Carl. So just get that out of your head!! (Do I sound like your wife?) The foam underlay for the laminate flooring is the only underlay to use. It is designed to be a thin but dense layer of cushioning.

If you use carpet pad you will have an uneven floor and problem throughout the life of the laminate. I also believe that the manufacturer will not warrant the floor unless it is installed over the proper underlayment.

Now go pull up that carpet AND PAD and don't forget the tack strips. Have fun and good luck!

You shouldn't. Laminate flooring needs to expand and contract and will not be able to move properly if it's on a carpet underlay. You should use a manufacture recommended product.

You can but a Silver backed specialist underlay is advisable for Laminate flooring(You don't want the flooring to be to spongy!?)

You're better off with a firmer, fibre board material to go under laminates - it's not that expensive.
