I was travelling across the country in September and there was a "burn ban" in the Texas panhandle area which precluded any chance of enjoying Texas BBQ on that trip.
Upon entering Oklahoma, I reluctantly went to a BBQ restaurant which someone had recommended and was pleasantly surprised. Oklahomans roast their meats a lot longer and slower than the Texans do (if this can be imagined!) and the texture and color of the meat is quite different. It sure was tasty!
For consistently good BBQ, though, it's true that nothing comes close to North Carolina for quality and taste.

I'm a native Texan and I've traveled a fair amount of the world. Your question does not have an answer......
BBQ by whos standards? There are so many styles and sauces to put on them.
After traveling through the south I have come to like a more vinegary style of sauce.
My favorite is mesquite smoked pork ribs from the "Hill Country" near Austin. Asian (sweet) BBQ is also very tasty and mimiked in some central/northern US styles.
Find what YOU like and that will be "the best"!

Nope. Tried BBQ in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kansas City and they cannot beat Texas. I even tried a place in Portland, Oregon - but they were trying to imitate Texas BBQ - it was okay but not great.
I do have to give kudos to the ribs in Memphis - yum.

Shoot yes, there is......but it's great to try all the different types. I live in OK and Leo's is great. We seem to take the best of both worlds and make it our own. Texas is great; Memphis BBQ is good (at least their rubs are), KC BBQ is good in it's own way. Hey, wouldn't it be great to have them all in one place to sample? Closest restaurant that I found that trys to do this is Smokey Bones, with their sweet, hot and mustard sauces and variety of ribs. However Corky's in Memphis is awfully darn good, as is Arthur Bryants in KC. Maybe we should start a thread with favorite BBQ places across country?

If you mean in regard to a local BBQ type fave,
not a restaurant, I live in Cali, the central coast area, and we have Santa Maria-style BBQ.
Loved by many and quite well known.
We don't like sauce to over-power the taste of the actual food!!
Tri-Tip BBQ was originated here....ever heard of it?
If not, you will.

I haven't tasted Texas home BBQ. I can say that there's a BBQ place in Maryland that has the best briskets i've ever had.

Ralph's BBQ at the Roanoke Rapids/Weldon exit off I-95 in North Carolina, about 5 miles before you reach Virginia on I-95
The Brunswick stew is also the best I ever had and I've been in 37 of our 50 states.

Memphis, TN, although I'm slightly biased because I live here. Corky's, A & R BBQ, and Neely's here are my favorites. But if you want to come when there is some serious BBQ, come to the Memphis in May festival.
