grapes need to be pruned back or all they will produce is leaves . put a potash product lightly around the roots ,,,, prune back to the 2 to 3 buds from the old branches , this is the time of years and you will have fruit next years Ron

It may not be anything you did or didn't do. It could have been a frost at a vulnerable moment. Did they set grapes that later dried up or dissappeared? What you describe does sound like they were a victim of a dry spell, but many areas are plagued with fungus and pests that require a regular spray program. I bet when you cleaned out your Dad's garden shed that there were a lot of mystery mixes. The local cooperative extension agent may have a pamphlet on care in your area. Different types ripen at different times. Maybe another local grape grower who knew him will know about this. If he was doing this for a long time, some of his concoctions may be hazardous and need special care for disposal. Again ask the coop ex guy. Good luck and don't beat yourself up about this. Grapes can be tricky and finicky but with good advice from local sources you can do this. By the way, I'm sorry about your loss. I can imagine that's part of the reason these grapes mean so much to you. I'm still caring for some of my Dad's african violets and it's been 4 years. I think they are easier than grapes but when I lose one it just wrecks me.

Maybe it wasn't you or anything you did or didn't do. Some years my vines produce good and other years are not good. This year, my grapes produced nothing. They looked great for the first part of the summer but just to nothing. Sorry. Smile anyway.

You may have cut off the buds that would have produced the fruiting canes this year. Pruning grapevines is not complicated, but it's not obvious. You need to cut back the vines leaving about 2 buds on "old" wood that will produce the producing canes for the next season. It's not all lost--just for this year.
