Ok, I am not trying ot sound racist by asking this question, but when one dates a Russian Exchange Student, what is the expectations in the relationship. I know, that the Russian Culture is totally different from the American Culture and I want to know what exactly is expected of a female in this culture. For instance, in some Islam cultures the male does not allow the female to be seen w/o her hijra in the presence of other males, unless they are close relatives. I just want to know what is a woman's role in Russian Society. BTW, I am in the USA, and he is an exchange student; so he is probalby not gonna adapt the the American Culture so quickly. Any incite would be extremely helpful!

If he stares at you a lot, then you can be sure that he likes you a lot too. And you don't need to be shy with him. During communist times in Russia, equality between men and women was the official policy preached in schools and at communist gatherings. And much of that influence still remains among Russian people. But you have to be prepared for some cultural differences that you are not used to. Russians usually fall in love first, and then date later. He is probably in love with you now. But you are not responding to him the way a Russian woman would. And he is not sure what to do next. I suggest that you make prolonged eye contacts with him and smile at him often. Perhaps then he will find the courage to approach you. But try not to act surprised if he confesses his love to you instead of asking you out for a date. You'll ruin the whole thing if you show your surprise.

If you just get to know the guy and don't worry about "culture" you might find that he is not that much different. People are people whatever the culture. We all put our pants on one leg at a time. Good luck.
