The first words out of Dr. Drake’s mouth that day stopped me cold; by the end of the year, our class would be drawing masterpieces, everything from lifelike portraits to beautiful pieces of pottery. If this is correct let me know and if not how do I change it to make it better?

My correction:

The first words out of Dr. Drake’s mouth that day stopped me cold. By the end of the year our class would be drawing masterpieces, everything from lifelike portraits to beautiful pieces of pottery.

The first sentence is a statement. It should have a period at the end.

I think the following would make things more clear

The first words out of Dr. Drake’s mouth that first day of Art class stopped me cold! "By the end of the year", he said, "everyone in this class will be drawing masterpieces, including everything from lifelike portraits to beautiful pieces of pottery".

OK, I cannot tell if: "by the end of the year, our class would be drawing masterpieces, everything from lifelike portraits to beautiful pieces of pottery" is the " first words out of Dr. Drake’s mouth," in which case add quotes, or if it is an entirely separate topic, in which case replace semi-colon with a period, cap. the b in By, and your good. (Although the latter wouldn't make much sense.)
