Texas was it's own country before becoming part of the US. We were the Republic of Texas. And contrary to popular belief, we cannot secceed from the United States. Prior to and during that time, parts of what we know of as Texas today was part of Mexico.

Texan to the max is the only answer that is the RIGHT answer….Texas can still withdraw from the Union (the United States) should it want to and divide into seperate states. TEXAS is the only state in the Union that can fly her flag as high as and next to the American flag. The Republic of TEXAS earned it's FREEDOM from Mexico, It's real estate from Mexico legally, morally and via great loss of life in order to live free without the restraints of the Mexican Dictatorship. Mexico on the other hand wants back what it once had and forfeited thru it's own device. Had the United States had not been fighting a civli war between North and South during all this Texas could have gotten the troops it asked for. The Alamo would have had the man power to have won that battle and the history of Texas--WHY Texan are such a proud people would be have been undisputable. Truth be told according to unslanted history the facts ARE undisputable just not accepted by those that keep the old boundary dispute alive. Very much like the Civil War re-inactments that continues the 'tradition' of dislike between southerners and yankees. Thus……Texas is like a different country --- Because IT IS…and will always be. God Bless Texas. It's not going to change no matter what ethnic majority occupys it. Dixie land will always be Dixieland…Yankee's--yankees. AMERICA is supposed to be a melting pot of cultures. We're supposed to try to get along. We as a common people should learn from our nation's past, understand we can not change history and try to make the future BETTER. Play nicer and stop digging up conflicts of the past.

Texas was an independent state or territory when became part of the rest of the states, conforming the United States of America. This is the reason that in the state flag you could read the "Republic of Texas" Texas fought against the Mexican to become independent because Texas was a territory of Mexico. But when Texas became part of the states it didn't belong to no foreign country, like Mexico.

If my history memory is correct, it was Mexico. Around 1836 Texas broke free from Mexico and I believe formed it's own Republic and then was annexed into the US around 1845.
