What about movie certificates? Like at a theatre? In my town we can buy ahead movies passes and give them as gifts. Buy enough so that your teen can invite someone along sometimes.
Or a magazene subscription to something that he/she is interested in.
Or if money is not a problem--RENT A LIMO AND LET HIM/HER INVITE FRIENDS ALONG AND GO CRUISIN! Have the limo pick them up at school or any crowded place.

Visa gift cards are great, the kids love them because they're accepted anywhere Visa is. They can buy clothes, food, or basically whatever they want or need. They can even shop via internet with their gift card. Also, they're not limited to one place with the card.
