People from many disciplines--or areas of expertise--work together in conducting research. You could have a multidisciplinary team of medical researchers, psychologists, and sociologists review people's adherence to a medical treatment plan for example. The medical researchers will conduct the exams and follow-ups; the psychologists will measure attitudes, personality traits, mood; and the sociologists will factor in socio-economic factors, race/ethnicity: taken together, you can determine which factors contribute to and which inhibit adherence to a particular treatment using the various skills each expert brings to the research project.

Multidiscipliany means more than one field. So a particlar question or problem may have many facets (e.g. psychological, sociological, economic and even philosophical). So a team considering such an issue might be made up from experts in all these areas.
