There is light shining around my door. I need to know what is best to close the gap around my door. I tried that foam that has adhesive, but then the door wouldn't close.

Yes, weather stripping, that's what it's called. I just hate to buy it, and fail at it once again.

Don't think of it as failure, but as an opportunity to always do it effectively thereafter. There are many different types of weather stripping; the one you tried was probably not the optimum type. Measure the gap in 1/16 increments low and high on the sides, and in the middle of the tops. Sketch it. Visit a locally owned hardware store at which you will find a knowledgeable salesperson who wants to help you in order that his/her business prosper against the big box competition. Show and explain your situation. Invest in the high quality product. Great probability that your next attempt will be successful. Good luck.

Lowes and HD carry a "nail on" weather strip. Cut appropriate length and nail on. It`s aluminum with a rubber bulb that seals against the face of the door.

Use a high quality silicone caulk. apply it in successive layers to avoid excess shrinkage. If you need to paint over the caulk make sure you buy paintible caulk. If not then you can choose colors, white or clear to blend in.
