U can not format same drive in which you are.
like if your prompt is c:
then u cant format your c drive.

if you want to format c: then you should go over a different prompt like d: or A:

like if you want to format c: then the process is follow:

you are at A prompt
A: format c:

you can use /q for quick format

um i want to say at the prompt format c:\ but new hard drives (in fact anything over 10gb) will not properly format the drive because of a limitation in the software and how the hard drive reads it. It can be done but you cannot format a 100 gb with this command.

Usually the first thing recommended when you first load up your system is to make the "recovery disk". Among the files on that recovery disk will be one to let you use the format c: command at the DOS prompt.

Format is deleting everything in that hard drive. Please make back up before deleting anything.

MSDOS
c> format c: (ENTER)

then will ask you if you want to format the hard drive, if you have another hard drive maybe will be deleted too.

It will delete all viruses all files and you need something to restore Windows.
