It is true that January is not the best month to be in Prague, anyhow you can still enjoy the time. You can visit jazz clubs, discos, if you like theatre you can go to an opera to one of many theatres there, if you like movies you can go to multicinemas (the movies there are in original sound version with czech subtitles), maybe two most known castle Karlstejn - more see at http://www.aboutczechia.com/karlstejn/ could be open (otherwise castles are usually closed in winter time). In spite of the cold weather you should go to Charles bridge and to Kampa and to see the Prague castle. Actually all the Old town centre is really nice and romantic, there are many restaurants and coffee houses everywhere in the centre.

You can also leave Prague and go to mountains (Jizerske hory or Sumava mainly for cross countring, Krkonose mainly for downhill run and snowboarding). YOu can book a room in a nice pension in mountains, which could be really very romantic for a young couple like you and your wife.

If you prefer warmer places, then you can always go to another country in southern Europe - SOuth Spain, Italy or Greece - there will be warmer weather even though not for being on a beach. In every case, if you are Americans, you dont need a visa to get to any country of Europian Union, so you need not worry about something like this.

I do not suggest that one goes to Prague until the Spring. Prague is a city you need to walk about in. In January, it is cold, Very cold. Yes, the castle, the Charles Bridge and an eclectic nightlfe. If you have already booked (which travel agent suggested Prague in January, I wonder?) you will need warm clothes. Full length furs are very good and leather coats (full length) will stop the wind. Natural wool jumpers, natural gloves good, thick sole shoes, take some leggings. Fashion can remain under your outer wrappings, just make sure you have damned good outer wrappings!

It is the same as in any other big European city in winter - bad weather, cold and dirty. On the other hand Prague is a beautiful historical place with a lot of nice and cozy restaurants and pubs, galleries and museums. If your wife enjoys theatre so take her to see Laterna Magica or Black Light Theatre. It is unusual and interesting

Wow,, have you just got to go then>? Weather is going to be awful... i suggest you put this off until Spring, where you can enjoy the resturants at the old towne square,, where you can sit outside..
There is a natl museum on the hill overlooking the main street,, it will be warm there....ha..
The castle across the river will be heated Inside...

other wise,, your going to be miserable....

good luck

There are loads of fantastic restaurants in Prague, and many shops which are quite good to look round.
