The best choice would be a debit card. You can get Euros from the ATM in Germany with it. There is a fee with every withdrawal, so don't withdraw too small amounts of money. But the fee on a debit card is usually much less than if you use the credit card at an ATM.
Getting cash with a credit card is very expensive.
Credit cards itself are not very common in Germany so a lot of places won't accept them. In bars, restaurants and small stores you pay cash. Bigger stores accept the debit card and only sometimes credit cards.
Travellers checks are a very safe way to bring money, because you can have them replaced if they're stolen.
But you pay a fee for it and you can only exchange them in banks.
So as Germany in general is a pretty safe country, I'd say you don't need travellers checks.
My advice: bring a debit card, if you have a credit card bring it also, but don't get one just for this trip, and take a small amount of US$ in cash as a backup just in case the ATM at the airport is broken or whatever funny things may happen.

Credit cards have an OK exchange rate. When I go to Europe I use an ATM for cash because they have them at every airport and also they have the best exchange rate.

Just use an ATM card, the machines are on every corner and spit out Euros as long as you want....I would take some travelers checks in case you lose your card or the magnetic strip won't work as infrequently happens. Oh Yeh, if you think you will need to use a bank check their days and hours they close on strange days at odd times....

I would take Euros and a little cash. I would also exchange early, before you go, to resist impulse buying on the way, and not being able to afford food while you are there.

I endorse the idea of a Debit card but Visa and MasterCard are the most widely recognised - to recap Visa or MasterCard Debit card. Most of the machines have a button you can press so that it works in English.

I would take credit/debit cards.
However if you take cash, exchange it in the USA.
