In USA, the hot water tap is always on the left. In Europe, British Countries and most of the rest of the world, the hot water tap is on the right.

It should be on the left .many people are right handed. To prevent opening the tap accidentally and sustaining burns. Putting the hot water tap on the left prevents reflex opening of the tap.

The hot tap goes on the left. People use the cold tap more often and as most people are right handed it makes it easier to turn on if that is placed on the right hand side. If you chose to switch the taps around you will probably scald someone - especially if they are not wearing their glasses or they dont switch the light on before washing their hands.

For the same reason that dooknobs and light switches are always in the same location, the hot water tap goes on the left, as you look at the sink.

By law, the hot water tap has to be on the left since most people are right handed so if they absent-mindedly reach out and turn on the tap (which they will do with their right hand) they won't get scalded.

Being a builder for many a year, I would just like to let you know that the hot is, as stated above, universally on the left. When people install their pipes/faucets incorrectly, you face the chance of unwanted burns and ulitimately, depending on the environment of the installation, possible lawsuits. Of course, if this is for your home, and not a business environment, you can always install it the way you feel more comfortable. Just be sure to have it labelled in case of guests.

I don't think so but when I fit a basin, sink or bath I always put the hot on the right and the mixer tap I bought a few months ago had the hot on the right when I bought it so I guess that is the side

Depends which country you are in. As long as they are clearly marked I doubt the difference between being on the left or right is critical, except for the regulations of the particular country.
