In answer to your question specifically about sheep, there are certain organisms that cause abortions in sheep and if a pregnant woman becomes infected with these organisms it can harm her baby or induce miscarriage. This is rare but it is perhaps wise to steer clear of sheep during the lambing season. I would also echo the other answers regarding cat litter trays. Apart from that, I see no reason to keep away from animals while pregnant. I live on a farm, have 2 cats and a dog and never had any problems when i was pregnant.

I've never heard of not going near animals when pregnant. This is my third pregnancy. The only thing I've heard is to not handle animal feces. Like if you have a cat, have someone else do litter duty. and if you garden, wear gloves in case of feces in dirt. This can cause somethng called toxoplasmosis which is not harmful to people but can kill a fetus.
Also, pregnant or not, after petting animals you should wash your hands.

There are only certain animals which you are not supposed to "go near". Sheep are apparently one of them.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and we have two dogs and a cat so I have been near them the whole of my pregnancy! It hasn't caused any problems at all. You have to wear gloves if you have to clear up their poo but other than that there are no problems at all.

its cats that cause the problems not sheep, cats can have a bactira that can casue some virus or infection or something that causes the mother and baby to become seriously ill but as far as im aware sheep are ok because my boyfriends parents are sheep farmers and their 3 kids are ok

Its sheep and cats poo I think the germ is called toxoplasmis but I dont rekon thats spelled right! Its a good idea to practice good hygeine with everything when preggers though as well.

The specific problem with sheep is that they carry E.Coli which causes terrible sickness & diarrhoea, dehydration etc etc. Contracting a case of E.Coli when pregnant would be a very very bad scene.

um the only thing thats known so far is changing the litter box... I mean if pregnannt women werent supposed to go near any animals at all, shed be confined in a bubble for nine months, and how about those pregnant farmer wives? you dont see them dropping like flies.

When you're pregnant or when the animals are pregnant? The animals will be very defensive and aggressive when they're pregnant, so they might hurt you and anyway it would stress them out. But I don't see why you should stay away from animals if you're the one that's pregnant. Unless they've got mad cow disease or something, both you and the baby should be perfectly fine.

I know about cats and not being near them when your preganant. I had a horse and was not limited to being near it. But I don't know about all other farm animals. Talk to your doctor. Cats feces could harm the unborn child.

Certain animal carry germs that could be harmful to your unborn baby. It can be in urine, poo and fur/skin.

It's best to safe than sorry, take the advise that you have already been given and look after you and the unborn child within.
