I defrag (registry too), scan for spyware/viruses, delete all cookies and temp files, and delete crap on my pc every other week. It is a new inspiron 9300.

My DH could diagnose it for you, but he charges $100 an hour. But he would probably suggest more RAM/Memory. You already mentioned the scan for viruses and spyware, and I know he definitely has fixed a lot of machines with tons of sypware especially on it. It could also be your OS....what do you use? (i.e., Windows XP, etc.)
Or call Dell, don't they make the Inspiron? And don't they offer free customer service? I remember my parents bought a desktop Dell that unfortunately got sent to them with Winows ME (cr@p). It basically died, and we had to start all over from the beginning. Because my parents aren't as computer savy as I am (and I am far from it, believe me!), I had to talk to the Dell tech support person and follow their directions. I believe free tech support came with the machine. I don't remember my dad having to give a credit card # or anything. Or it could be only for a year, not sure.
Anyways, sorry I couldn't be more help, but good luck with it.

To begin with, click on start > run type msconfig. Press OK Click on STARTUP tab.
Uncheck all unwanted entries entries there that you do not need at startup. Press Apply, Press OK. Say Yes to Reboot the computer.if possible uninstall some programs from your computer which are not essential.(start > control panel >add/remove programs) Free Crap Cleaner ccleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
(uncheck the option to install yahoo toolbar during instalation of ccleaner, if you do not want yahoo toolbar to be installed on your computer)
Run Disk Defrag once in a while.

1) Add RAM.
2) increase free disk space (remove unneeded programs from hard drive, delete temp files and folders, switch to a larger hard drive, add a second hard drive)
3) reduce the number of programs running in your system tray/at startup. You can do this by going to Start, Run, MSConfig, and unchecking unneeded items.
4) scan for/remove spyware/adware/malware.

Reload the OS.
Use a good anti virus and spy program.
That means you will have to pay for it.
Hey, $100 is worth all the wasted time.

most of the things ppl said here are reat...you may need to add these too:
1. if u r using winxp...or any other wndows with too much visual effects remove them:
- right-click "my computer" click properties, in "advanced" tab select "settings" from the performance part then in the visual effect select "adjust for best berformance"...this will make it much like win2000...yet it will will really aeffect the performance...
2. make your virtual memory bigger: after u changed the visual effects in the last step...go to "advnced" tab in "preformance options" there's a part for changing virtual memory....click change..then set the memory size as you wish...you may need to retart after you do so....
