It is correctly called a Toto bag. It is a bag created by MGM when they made "The Wizard of Oz" and Judy Garland needed a "bag" to carry her little dog Toto all over the place. They created the "bag" and called it a "Toto Bag." Over the years, it has become to be called a "tote bag" because women throw just about anything in there, including a real small dog.

A tote bag is usually slightly larger than a purse, and is used to carry things around. For instance, if you were going to the beach, you'd bring a tote bag with a towel, sunglasses, flip flops, money, a book, a beach umbrella, and maybe some plastic shovels and pails for making sand castles. If you were going to the gym, you'd bring a tote with socks, gym shoes, headphones, some sort of music playing device, a towel, some hair ties, stuff like that. They are great if you're a mom on the go, and they come in really cool patterns. If you were really creative, I'm sure you could find a pattern to make one. As far as i know, a Tote bag is a bag which is slightly bigger than a hand bag, It can hold one set of clothes for an overnight stay.

A tote bag is like a bigger version of a purse. a lot of girls at my school use them to carry their books from class to class. others use them on tripps. they really are useful, and they can usually be found very cheap.
