I agree that it depends on the 18-year-old.

Remember that "abroad" can be as safe as "home". Your home is my abroad. Obviously there are areas of war but I don't think you'd be going there.

And college towns are often pleasant places all over the world.

Depends on the 18 year old, and I guess what country too. My daughter would be more than ready to study abroad.. but her 22 year old friend wouldnt be able to study alone in the next town.

I'm also 18year old and next year i should go studying abroad alone. I think it will be very hard for you, but if you have some goals and dreams i think that nothing can stay in front of it. I wish you succes, and don't forget that "in life you will never receive what you really desirve, but you will receive what you are expecting to receive"

Where comes the question of safety?
Education should give courage.
Studying abroad means one should be qualified enough.
If the 18 year old is a girl and she worries about sex harassment, that can happen even at home country. It is all in our hands. Ask her to be courageous & proceed.

I think it is a wonderful experience.
It all depends on your researching well where to go, the school you are interested in, types of accomodation, the city or country you intend to visit, and a little luck.
I'm 57. When I was 17 I went to California US in an exchange student program and I love it. Besides, that's where I learned English which was quite useful throughout my professional life.
It is a good opportunity for you to test your ability of taking care of yourself, learning how to live with different people in a different culture. Your view of the world and of people changes, usually for the better.

it is safe, if you have strong determination and if you know what is wrong and what is right.

if you go abroad and loose control over youself and get involved in too much alcohol/drugs/sex etc etc etc then you are better at home. but if you know you can make a difference - then go ahead.

remember, it is like a challenge (depending on case to case) and challenge is to stay focussed on to your goal. do this and for sure you would be successful - not only in studies but life itself.

Depends where. Nottingham in England is a bit dodgy. Believe it or not, some parts of Oxford are no-go zones for gowns.

Georgetown is good but stay away from the crime-infested areas (and I don't mean Congress). One of my friends working in Washington DC and he carried a gun for safety.
