What are some of the best math practices to help students learn and retain math?

The students in my 7th grade math class are doing poorly on their tests which are 100% story problems. How can I help my students to better grasp math concepts while retainiing the necessary information?

don't do story problems. they may be interesting, yes, but they are often confusing. stick with normal equations. your students may like you less for giving them boring problems, but it will help them retain information better than stories. also, have them ask questions in class so that you can help them.
