Personally I don't like it. It doesn't even sound like a dog's name. Maybe I'm not pronouncing it correctly my the first think I thought of was a monkey. I'm just being honest.
It's all up to the parent doing the naming. If you like it--go with it. Just keep in mind there are bullies out there who might make fun.

Kater sounds like TATOR head and thats not going to be a good thing cause all babies hav e abig head when there born and you dont want her nick name to be tator head....thats horrible....and kids in school are going to come up with worst things...but thats what i first thought of when i read it.....goodluck but if i was you id keep looking!!!

It all depends on your ethnic group. I don't think its a nice name for a redheaded Brit. It all depends on what your baby looks like the baby's personality etc.
When I was pregnant I was sure I would name my daughter Klara. She was born and she definitely didn't look like a Klara. She was nameless for 3 days until we agreed on Mikayla. It suits her to a tee.
