technically china is still a communist regime, however, over the last 20 years, the chinese have managed to evolve the communist idea so that is allows for a certain degree of capitalism, and therefore economic growth. one could say that it is now an appointed (as opposed to inherited) monarchy system, whereby the crown owns a huge percentage of everything, and has absolute power over the people, and is open to trade with other nations.
as a system it seems to be working.... they have developed their own space ship and sent their own man into space (2005 i think)... for a poverty ridden country 20 years ago, that is an astounding recovery and also a clear indication that they have nuclear technology (always comes before space tech.)
the effects of all this on the world today? well, china is seen as a huge untapped consumer by western businesses, and as a huge untapped resource by western industry. however, the chinese govt. still keep strict control over everything in their boundry... this means that for any foreigner wishing to do business in the country, they have to hand over majority %age to the chinese. they also have a strict control over their currency... this is having world wide reprocussions, and the US have asked many times that they allow it to be traded on the open market as it is having a huge impact on industry with in the US.
i'm only touching a few points here... it is a huge subject, so would suggest you do a few searches on internet on the subject.

While China is still under the control of the Communist Party it can be argued that China dumped Communism and developed "socialism with Chinese characteristics" with the rise to power of Deng Xiaoping in the post-Mao era. While he never held formal positions of state he was the power behind the "socialist market economy" which has become virtually a form of capitalism, giving the benefits and disadvantages of a market economy while allowing the Communist Party to continue to rule a single party state.
As for its effects in the modern day - the world economy has been flooded with cheap, Chinese made goods while the Chinese state seems to be on course to become one of the world's superpowers in the not too distant future.

I agree with Dr.O any similarity ended with the death of Mao. It's a totalitarian Dictatorship the same as Russia under Stalin. Ppl misuse the word Communism. For example, the person in China who was in charge of property and farms is now a multi-millionair. It's effects on the future are hard to predict, same as No. Korea, not a communist state either. The truth is true Communism is impossible in huge countries like USSR and China. It can & is working in Cuba, but it was forced on Castro, as he was trying to develope a socialist Democracy similiar to Denmark, but the US blockaid changed all that.

Think about it....when America became a country that allowed the people to think freely...and establish free enterprise..our future was blessed...Look at the advances in the past 200+ years because of our freedoms here in America. The technology, advances in medicine, economic opportunities. The people that suffer in China from it Communist Rule are not allowed the opportunity to grow personally. So they live like they did thousands of years ago..Communism kills personal growth...youre just a thing...youre used up then thrown away...

China is still a communist state, although the regime has slightly loosened the reins on the people, it still remains a one party nation. I believe it is the largest communist state in the world.
