Columbia was the first popular name for the United States (a feminine version of Columbus). The female figure, draped in white (purity), with a blue wrap (truth), and holding aloft the lamp or light (justice, freedom etc) was a popular symbol used early in U.S. history. She has gone through many incarnations but the latest is quite lovely.
