My boss is really into Halloween - this year he dressed as a Red Hat Lady, complete with feathered, flowered, bowed and veiled red hat, high heeled shoes, a purple dress, makeup - the works. he even wore nail polish and had his eyebrows tweezed. Two years ago he shaved his head and painted it green to go as Shrek.
As for kids, I like the ones that look like the kid was involved in making it (for kids over about 6). Store bought costumes are kind of boring. The Tin Man made of aluminum foil covered boxes, a pirate with mom's old scarf tied around the head, a mummy wrapped in disintegrating toilet paper, a raisin made from a stuffed garbage bag, a fairy princess with glitter falling off the cardboard star at the top of her wand, even a ghost in an old sheet with holes cut out for eyes - that's what I like. If you're looking for ideas, check the websites below.

An older woman, plump, with glasses and missing many teeth, who dressed in a filmy lilac gown with a veil, a crown of flowers, a dark purple cape made to look like wings and carrying a wand. She called herself Alyssa, fairy godmother, first class, retired. Always thought that was one of the cleverest.
Best child's costume was a Superman suit with the big "S" in the center being followed by "Jr.".
My own best was a sheet made to look like a Roman matron's robe, carrying a white stuffed bull, with powdered hair and face and the placard, "the Unknown Martyr; gored to death by a bull in the Colisseum". Got me first prize in the church's Halloween costume contest.

My favorite costumes were Glina and Dorothy, from The Wizard of oz. I have a friend who was a slinky, and she made a coil of wire aroud herself and braided wire into her hair and coiled it.Sshe also wore slinkys on her arms. You could be Miss America, or a credit card. Just attatch two pieces of cardboard with ribbons and put it over your shoulders. Add a fake credit card number, and a shiny strip of paper.
