It was Halloween and me and my brother were visiting Grandad Gorman down the country. The evening was growing dark as we sat beside the roaring fire. The oil-lamp burned with a dull light that failed to lighten up the corners of the old white-washed cottage. 'Do you believe in ghosts?' asked someone from the far corner of the room. 'Who said that' shouted Grandad, obviously awakening from a light sleep. 'Who said it' again he asked. Uncle Mick stepped forward into the light. 'Alright' he asked again 'who of you believe in ghosts'. No one answered.
'Well' said Uncle Mick 'when I was working in London, there was always strange going's-on in our digs. It was an old Victorian house that had seen many things in it's day'. He paused as he lit up Grandad Gorman's pipe for him. 'You see' he continued 'it was said that it had been bombed during the war - both wars in fact, the First one and the second' he paused as he handed Grandad his pipe. 'And about twenty people vanished completely during the bombings'.
'Will you put a couple of logs on the fire' called Grandad and I leaned down to do it, 'and don't believe all that rubbish Mick is on about - you'll both have nightmares'.
'Well anyway' restarted Uncle Mick 'this night there was an electrical blackout and we only had a candle to light up the place. As I made my way up to my room, you could hear a pin drop'. He stopped and looked over his shoulder. It was then that I noticed his shadow dancing on the wall from the light of the fire. I felt cold and moved closer to the flames. 'Suddenly' called out Uncle Mick 'and I swear to God it's true, the attic door above my head flew open and a bundle of old rags fell out almost on top of me, and do you know what' he asked 'I could see from the candlelight that they were army clothes, a corporals jacket I could make out and it had brown stains over the chest of it. It's as true as I am sitting here' Uncle Mick blessed himself. 'And do you know what' he continued, 'I ran straight back down the stairs and into the kitchen. There was no way, I was going to me bed in that state'. 'Had you been drinking' asked Grandad. 'Not a single drop passed my lips that night' Uncle Mick replied, 'but I'll tell you what happened. You see, the lights had come back on in the streets, so I thought it must be the fuses. I knew they were in the coal cellar somewhere. As I made my way there, I could hear that the most frightening strange sounds were coming from the basement. Although they were frightening, I was curious, so I grabbed a long handled sweeping brush and made my way down the stairs. If it was something terrible, I was going to make a stand for myself and give it a good bashing. Anyway, I made my way down the stairs, when suddenly, I could not move. The monster grabbed me by the foot and I could feel his clammy cold hands through me socks. I could not make a sound from my throat even though I tried. I then tripped and fell down the ramainder of the stairs into a heap at the bottom. Suddenly, the lights came on and lo and behold, there stood in front of me was an old man, he must have been well over seventy years old with long grey hair and a long beard. As I stood up, he stood to attention and saluted me. 'Corporal Mansfield, all present and correct Sir' this weird creature said to me. 'Who on earth are you' I asked him. 'The son of the house owner Sir, home on compassionate leave' he said. 'Mother of God, I asked him - when did you go on leave - '23 September, 1943 Sir' he replied.
'And do you know what' Uncle Jack had obviously come to the end of his story 'he was a deserter from the army for nearly 35 years, that's what, and everyone thought he was dead. Been living in the basement all that time - and was never seen or caught'.
I relaxed, having expected a different ending and saw that Grandad was staring up at the ceiling. 'Mick' asked Grandad of me 'the old dog has been missing in the trees at the back of the house all day, do me a favour and go and have a call and a look for her'. 'You want me to look in the woods - on Halloween of all nights - sorry Grandad, but there is no way I'm going out anywhere tonight'............... Everyone started laughing, and it seemed to me that I was the only one who did not think it the least bit funny......................

eric and i were making our way down to the basement of our rented vacation hse. suddenly i heard "eric eric" i turned around and asked "who said that" . mark answered tt strange sounds were coming from the basement. he asked me: are u afraid? do u believe in ghosts? as we walked further, suddenly the attic door flew open. we ran and headed for the main door. mark was sure the sounds came from the woods. he suggested i walked in there and investigate. "you want ME to look in the woods?" i asked mark. before I could continue further, i saw a monster appeared behind mark and the monster grabbed him by the foot. i grappled with the monster and managed to set mark's foot free and we ran for our lives.....
