The adrenaline rush of the fall blocks your pain receptors temporarily. The same things happens when you're injured playing most sports. I broke an arm snowboarding two years ago and had no idea until I went to tighten my binding.

because when you excersise your adrenaline pumps and in return that shuts off pain. If you notice after excercise you feel good and only get tired later. One guy i know ran 6mi on a broken ankle....he broke it 1 mile into the race
