One of the best conversations on Friends. Rachel's flirting with an ob/gyn.

Doc: What do you do for a living?
Rach: I'm a waitress.
Doc: Do you ever think at the end of the day, "If I have to see one more cup of coffee.....!"?

(For any smartie pants out there, no, I know that's probably not the actual wording.)

Funny conversation, though. :-)

Also, in a different context, I heard of a cop who works rape crimes who said that it took a while to get past what he does and enjoy sex with his wife, and it never goes back to the way it was. After working in the sex crimes unit, he saw "vagina," "hyman," "uterus", etc. The use of clinical, appropriate, annotomical terms made a difference.

In general, for anyone whose profession (assuming your profession is not in the pornography industry) has to do with the physical aspects of a woman's reproductive or gentital area, I would imagine after a while, you'd be able to look at it from a clinical point of view, taking the sex aspect out of it. It might take a while to get comfortable enough with your profession (depending on what it is, exactly) to not have it affect your sex life, though.

The theory that an ob/gyn would not enjoy seeing women's genetalia based on the fact that he looks at it all day sends the message that on some level, he's equating what he does with sex. I would NOT be comfortable thinking my ob/gyn had sex on his mind even subconciously or in any amount while I'm getting an internal exam.

Medical training enables a human being to be able to view the physical body as a series of parts and "Bit's as you put it.

A person with the intelligence to be able to enter into and figure out the workings of the human body... SHOULD have the presence of mind to also be able to separate the primal desires attributed to them.

I'm sure some people Cross lines and some shut down completely as a coping mechanism... I suppose that must be why most Gynecologists are Female and most proctologists are men?

I can assure you that looking at bits at work will not affect your interest off the job. When you are doing a physical exam there is so much to think about and look for that it is not the same at all. Any woman who has done a breast self exam knows that it is a mile from masturbation.

Gyno's don't go into their field just to look at female bits. And just because they are gyno's doesn't mean they are the worlds best lovers either.

I think that they are highly trained and professional so work is work. Wouldn't want to be married to one though! You would always be wondering whether they were still on the job.

I think you learn to see it as something different - you can sorta detach yourself at work :)
Who could ever get bored of looking at ladies bits anyway?
