Sure they can - but it boils down to a question of your own belief.
Isn't there a Santa? The lie may be that santa wears a red suit and sports a white beard and bear belly, but doesnt Santa also represent love, giving, thoughtfulness and sharing? And arent we all recipients, AND givers of that? Hopefully more than just at Christmas, but certainly at least then. Surely that is not a lie!?!
Maybe there is a God and maybe there isnt. We can look at the state of the world and think it a lie that God exists. But on the other hand, all we have to do do is look at the wonder and miracle of how life is made: how you for example, developed from the joining of two cells to become uniquely you , and how all species recognize each other, etc. etc.. and we just have to know in our innermost heart and soul that God is no lie.

Ok, idiot, read up on your history. The way we "celebrate" Santa Claus is not true but there really was a Saint Nickolaus in Germany were the idea of St. Nick comes from. As the stories about St. Nickolaus traveled they were changed and the tales grew. When it came to America it stopped being St. Nick to Santa Claus and then stuff become commerialized and such. We may not follow the same calendar year as when Baby Jesus was born but it does not mean he wasnt' born.
You are comparing apples and oranges here and who is the "they" you speak about? Believers of Christ, God , the Holy Trinity? Give me a break if you dont' believe dont' believe it is not my job to lead you done a spirtual path you have to find your own. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, The Great Pumpkin(as in charlie brown) etc are all cute made up ideas for kids. The gift of believing in them isnt a lie it is having the childlike quality always in your heart and being able to enjoy the simple things in life.
Grow up and do your research.

BIg, big difference. We told our kids about Santa, and they and we had a great time for a few years. When they got older and started to figure things out, we told them about the story of St. Nicholas and how the myth/legend came about. To this day my college kids still talk about Santa and like to have some of their presents "set out" as if Santa came! We are Christian believers, and therefore, know that God and His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are real. The evidence is present in the Bible and in our lives. No lie there!
Who are "they" anyway? Parents? Society?

You asked a great question. I think everyone knows that Santa is a lie. But people are way more willing to lie to themselves about God and believe it. So yes.

I like the answer that says it is not a lie, if you believe it is true you are mistaken. Is this person going into politics? Or can this quote be taken from George Bush or Yogi Berra?

Sure they can - in either instance, they're trying to give you motivation to be good (both are always watching and sorting the "naughty/nice"/"good/evil"
William James said that "faith is a bet you can't lose." If believing in either or both brings you joy/peace/meaning then do so. Do what you will, as long as you harm none.
