Here're what my experiences at Jr. College and University taught me:
A 'studying lifestyle' isn't something you can merely settle down into. You'll be settling down into your CHAIR, for sure, but your mind (its intentions/distractions) may well be like puppy resistant to the leash. Your deeper goal of mastering study skills doesn't surface with all the behaviors for success intact. That is, at first you're all fired up to sink your teeth into an assignment (reading, thinking, formulating a response, then expressing it on paper), and sit down to do it, but staying focused is really, really hard. The mind's attention is like a monkey jumping from tree to tree, very difficult to keep still enough to stay focused. Just pause and VISUALIZE (the brain can't distinguish between real and fantasy) yourself in the act of being deeply involved in your study process. Sometimes a BRIEF (moments) break from study - walk to get a sip of water, use the bathroom, nibble on a snack - will refresh and reinforce your task of being absorbed by the assignment.
To overcome the interruptions we give ourselves when we try to stay at it, the key is to CONSISTANTLY come right back to it in the shortest time possible, and CONSISTANTLY be positive ("I'm a success, I'm keeping my attention on my assignment"), Negative thoughts are useless, and worse, the mind may try to make them a reality - just don't indulge that nonsense.
Each time you apply yourself to developing your new style ("Do Not Enter-Brainiac At Work"), your mind will benefit from your efforts. Eventually you'll be able to help other students/friends with personal experience on how you earned your As.
What a great question, so glad I could share in answering. I made myself more miserable than I had to be by putting off studies. Definitely, starting early is a major key. If you just take the assignment, lay it all out at home, think over your approach/plan for getting the thing done, imagine how it might look/feel when it's done, you've given your subconscience something to mull over on its back burner before you actually put your hands into it. You'll discover how to build and develop what works for you as you go along, and this is a juicy-good experience in discovering the amazing-ness of your mind (how dya' like them linguistics...).
Wonderful luck to you. This is your education, get it all!

Before you know it you will be well into your studing, but remember you still need to take time out and yahoo answers is a good way of taking your mind off things and will entertain you as well.
