I mean teaching the difference between definite and indefinite articles in English as a second language. Any level. It's a home assignment.

It is a difficult question Aarticles, esp the the, seem to be going out of fashion. How about examples from usage in newspapers these days and earlier?I have seen people drop the the even where it is needed: This is the book I want to read.

well....have some common objects... a pencil, a flower...etc. put some of the objects in the hands of the students "Jose, do you have the pencil?" is asked to him if he does have it......"Miguel, do you have a pencil?" if he doesn't have it ... maybe this will help them to see that "the" is when there is a certain object we have and can talk about....and "a" is when it is general and we are not talking about a specific thing
