1879- 1888 is a pretty big difference. I would try and pin it down a bit more. Make sure you look at the actual image of the records not just the transcription as that is sometimes obviously wrong. Try and find his family in 1880 census if he's not with them it's likely he wasn't born then. If he was alive in 1910, 1920, 1930 check those censuses too for more clues. If all else fails I would go with the 1888 date, a two year old clearly looks like one, whereas a thirty year old isn't going to look that much different to a 34 year old for the draft if he had lost track of his age and the informant on the death cert is obviously never the person themselves. Edit Oops just realised that you first found him as a 12 yo not 2 yo - sorry. Also is there an occupation for him in 1900? Might give you a clue if he was still at school or out to work.
