Have you checked out the Palm Software Support site?

http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/

You have to enter your phone carrier in order to proceed from this page. Then you can download all of the software you need to run the device.

The "free" way to download music is by using the Realplay program. If it is already on your device, then you are ready to go. However, the Treo has a limited amount of memory, so I bought a Sim card from SanDisk, 1.0 Gbytes. When you have that in the slot on the Treo, Realplay will copy music to the card instead of to the internal memory.

As for what else you can't do without the startup CD, you'd have to go on a program-by-program basis.

Do a search on MP3 player on any Palm software site and you can find a veritable cornocopia of them, RealPlayer happens to be one that has marketing agreement with Palm so it is there on the CD and being market as THE solution for Palm as WMP is THE solution for Windows Mobile. But anyone who has time to dig further knows RealPlayer and Win Media Player is possibly the worst player on the respective devices.

Nothing that you cannot do without CD, I have been without it purposely for months I have a Tungsten T3..
