Self is that which observes. So, for example I could say that I'm a 30 year old black student of architecture, but that's not my self. My self is the part that watches all that goes on - emotions, events, anything. Anything that doesn't last isn't the self. My body doesn't last, so it's not my self. My emotions don't last, so they're not my self. My family won't last, so they're not my self. My thoughts change and don't last, so they're not myself. Most people tend to believe that their self is their mind, but a mind is something that changes. The self watches the mind change.

My perception is filled with nonsense and unable to reply. All the above answers are pretty right on!
But i have a storehouse of stolen material which does inform most of my life - and that says that the Self, as i like to think of it, is the "space" in which the question you asked "What is "self"?" or any question asked arises. It is the space in which life occurs.
The Self is the context of context.
One morning i would like to wake up and turn on this stupido computer and log into Yahoo Q and A and see a million questions from every person, all the same all asking
"who are you?"

self is the point of free will within the individual. the mind and the soul and other aspects of the person are the tools thru which a person relates to the world around him. they are outside of self.

I find it interesting ,I looked in the Concordance
of my Bible, for self ,and it isn't even listed.
Websters Dictionary defines self-your own person or character.
My own perseption is, that a complete person functions through their mind and soul, the way we were raised, our environment, and our individual life experiences.

Just asking the question, what is self? brings you to the answer that you are an Individual. Unique, a one of a kind, all things are, from snowflakes, to fingerprints, to grains of sand that are of the whole of the earth. Individuality, and consciene there of, is the self.

self is our best guess as to what and whom we are and is effected and changed as we grow older by things and those around us.questions are asked to ourselves . do others smell this the same or see this in same light or is my reality differant . truth is we are everlasting souls and all have equal propertys and realitys and black is black and white is white . we are pieces of genes of every ancestor before us different but same . reality can change if we allow ourselves to be confused by worrying about things that dont matter or make us more human . self is what we want it to be and limited only by our minds and what we want to belieave and can change at any moment but in truth self is what we are and will probably never understand in this life here on earth .
