Can you help with this problem?

When i turn on my PC my desk top has no program icons(shortcuts) whatsoever ...i have to go into Start ...then into programs and choose the program i want to use.Why aren't these program icons on the desk top.....i have no "trash can"icon,no MSN Messenger,no Firefox,nothing!!What can be done to bring these on screen?

Right click in an unused portion of the desktop, and click on the "Show icons" option.

drag those programs from start onto desktop ,they become shortcuts.
