There is no argument on the right, so long as Lilian Thuram plays there, there is no contest. If any of you remember how excellent Jocelyn Angloma was, even he couldn't break into the team because of Thuram.
But left back is quite open now. Paolo Maldini's best years in that role appear over, he operates better in the centre now. Roberto Carlos has always been a myth as a defender.
I don't rate Ashley Cole that much either.
I am very impressed with Florent Malouda. From what I saw when he dons Lyon's colours, he's very effective. Gianluca Zambrotta also looks comfortable in that position.
But who are the others?

Gianluca Zambrotta has been brilliant at left-back for years and still is but I'd say, when fit, Gabriel Ivan Heinze.

Gianluca Zambrotta is probably the best in the world at this moment, though Philip Lahm is going to be somebody to watch.

Hey Thuram wasnt a left back,and for me Zambrotta is the best in the world.But if you are looking for the next best guy,look no further than Marseille and Nigeria's Taye Taiwo,won third best player in the WYC and he's just 20.
