when i take the lid off to place something into my compost bin i an getting bitten by loads of small flying gnat like bugs is this normal or am i doing something wrong

Not normal in well managed compost heap. I have attached an on-line tutorial which should help you learn good composting practices.

My guess is that you have fruit and vegetable scraps which are not well buried under woody and leafy materials.

Normal, some insects eggs are hatching in the warmth created by compost action. If it bothers you spray in side the bin with a good flying insect spray when you open the bin.

Hello,bugs will always be present around garbage..to help decompose..you need them.maybe consider wearing some type of mask...and gloves...so you dont end up eating the bugs
YES this is perfectally normal....just be sure to do this quiet a way from your house....
