Iv'e been reading articles in the newspaper for the last few days about the "muslim veil contoversy". What exactly is going on because I read today that the risk of Muslims rioting in the streets of London is quite high (Like in Paris last year). Is this true or is it being overblown?

I think the veil issue is actually a symptom of a deeper issue or two. Firstly, a lot of Brits are fed up with people demanding special status because of their religious beliefs. Why should believers have special privileges - i.e. the right to wear a mask and hide their face when many find it offensive? Secondly, we are constantly reminded that we live in a multicultural society; but most people did not choose this and were not consulted and have had it foisted upon them against their wishes. When they object they are branded as racists and so have had to repress their discomfort and keep quiet. But it is bound to surface eventually and the veil/mask issue is a very visible example upon which to project these feelings.

With reference to the actual contoversy of the veil which is, in effect, a mask; many, many people do not FEEL safe with a person who is hiding behind a mask, they find it distubing and intimidating becasue they cannot read the expression on the wearers face.

The media have definitely got Muslims in their sights at the moment. Every day there is Muslim leader on the TV, Radio and in newspapers defending Islam and accusing people of being Islamophobic.

The veil issue is just an example of this. One teaching assistant wanted to wear a veil whilst teaching however, the school decided that she shouldn't. She took the Local Education Authority to court. She lost the unfair dismissal argument but a judgement went in her favour as she had been victimised by the local authority.

In my personal opinion I think she should not be allowed to wear a veil whilst teaching children as I honestly believe she can't communicate effectively.

However, in 'multi-cutural' Britian the cultures are starting to clash. This is not a popular thing to say but we do live in Britian and this is a country with Western Values. We live our lives differently to Muslim communities. But before 9/11 we co-existed, so why are there the big differnces now. I think the terrorists are suceeding.

There are a lot of Muslim fanatics out there who are stoking the fires. The media is responding in a negative way - The Daily Mail, The Star and The Sun are being Islamaphobic.

The situation is geting worse and I fear we will have riots. Probably not in London but Bradford, Luton, Leicester and other areas with large Muslim communities.

Member of Parliament, Jack Straw, simply stated that he'd prefer it if his consitituents would remove veils when speaking to him so that he can see their faces. As usual, his perfectly reasonable request - which was only a request and not a demand - sparked a very vocal response from the 'poor us' Muslims. I wouldn't be surprised if there was violence as a result of this. We all know that no-one has a right to question Muslims in any way. Anyone who does can find himself a target for violence. I wouldn't be surprised if there were riots on the streets. I think that this might show the Government what the public thinks as they have failed to address this problem in the past.

It probably blew out of all proportion when a stupid Brit politician (Jack Straw)who hasn't got two brain cells to rub together, voiced his opinion that if he was to meet a Muslim woman, in his capacity of Lord Almighty, he would expect her not to be veiled!!
This politician is one of the biggest creeps in British Government "Yes Mr Blair , No Mr Blair, 3 bags full Mr Blair"!!
He took a calculated risk when he made his little declaration, he thought it would win him popularity with the racist mob! and prove he had his finger on the pulse!!
He was of course correct!
The Man is just a 'Yes' man and has never ever had an original thought in his head! (As you may have guessed, I cant stand the feller)!!
So back to your question, I think there is a risk of Muslims rioting in the street, not just over the veil issue but over a culmination of anti Muslim propaganda! This would suit suit the racist mob down to the ground, they could then have their Anti Muslim riot and every one could go berserk together!!
I would like to place the blame on religion, but the veil is nothing to do with religion, (despite what you may have heard) and Jack Straw is also nothing to do with religion, he is just a self seeking pra*t, full of his own importance
I really do hope that violence doesnt come out of this no one could win, heads could be smashed, people even killed, for what valid reason??
We have Brit racists and I expect we have Brit Muslim racists. I would rather have the supression of our so called 'freedom of speech' than bloody street riots!
We have our fair share of 'gung ho' bods in the UK who would be only to pleased to say "Bring it on" etc, etc!!
I dont want to see it, I've seen a few racist riots in the UK, not at all a pretty sight!!
Muslims are very touchy about their customs, they dont want their women to parade around dressed like street girls, this is no real excuse to start a riot, who is it really harming??
'Intimidating' is the latest 'in thing'!
I cant think of anything more intimidating than a Brit girl having a couple of rings through her nose, with her ears pierced all around, and a bloody big stud in the middle of her forehead, and finish it off with a studded tongue!!
This effect mixed with the wearing of net stockings full of holes is not a pretty sight! But whatever turns you on!!
The solution?? Sorry I havent got one, but you never asked that did you? How about tolerance all around, thats going a bit over the top though isnt it??

basically jack straw said he ha a problem with the veil because it is an object of segregation, preventing proper social interaction and coming across as quite itimidating, he said that he doesn't allow women to wear veils when they are in meetings with him because he sees it as a communication barrier. This caused a lot of uproar and the government welcomed open debate about the issue, but the muslims saw it as a threat to their religion and their rights and started kicking up a fuss, rather than joining th mature debate.

so yeh its true, there have been protests and there is a threat of larger signs of their upset.

It seems to suit some people to ignore that Jack Straw didn't say the veil should be banned, only that he found it intimidating to speak to some one wearing one. I agree on both counts. They should not be banned, and I would find it difficult to talk to some one wearing a veil, or a terrorist type balacalava, or even a paper bag on their head. And the young lady was not a teacher. She was a teaching assistant, totally different.

Its all another diversion - actually a deliberate ploy by the Govt (Jack Straw) to distract from their poor performance and the fact that the their opposition, the Conservative party, are now a serious threat.

Muslims and culture in the UK is an easy target - and people over here are so damned opinion about what they consider to be 'foreign'.

In relation to riots - I guess the stuff you read could be to do with the fact that the Eid celebrations kick off tonight (for 24 hours) and with it, what usually happens in our area (in the North West and the North) gangs of young asian lads use it as an excuse to engage in general merriment, and like any big event, this can lead to trouble.

Because the muslim community over here are being treated really badly by media and other idiots who are slagging them off, then yes, there could well be some trouble tonight. But I certainly hope not.

EID MUBARAK TO ALL!!

The article that you mention is a young teacher had a tight veil showing only her eyes and the pupils could not understand what she was saying. It has been blown out of proportion and the press should concentrate on the more serious headlines about all the stabbings & shootings not to mention the troubles in other contries
