In the daytime, look at the sun. It rises in the east and sets in the west. You don't need a watch to tell what time it is you should be able to tell the time by where the sun is in the sky (appx. of course, you can know the hour but not the minute). By the same theory you can tell which way is north or south.

during the day, remember the sun travels East to West by passing through the Southern sky. So, depending on the time of day, take a look at the sun (not directly) and it'll give you a fairly good idea.
At night, just look for the Northern Star if you can.

Usually the sun if its about an hour before or after noon. It rises in the east so the direction it's "leaned" towards before noon would be east, and after would be west. If you look at the directions as "W" "E" "N" would be "above" them on a drawn diagram, and south is opposite. Make sense? Look at the sun.

this is kinda strange, but the fungi seem to grow on the north side of tree bark.learned it in boy scouts.also you have the north star at night.another trick we learned in scouts is to magnitize a needle, get a glass of water and a fork.use the fork to very gently rest the needle on the surface of the water.there is a certain pressure that will let the needle float if done properly, and gently.the needle will point north.look for canadian geese flying-in winter they go south....hmmm...all i got

I am assuming you are not at one of the "poles" and that you can see the sun, which rises in the east and sets in the west. This tells you "approximate" directions.

Go to a library or talk with a cub or boy scout who can show you the watch method. Find a scout manual and look up the answer
