There are a number of books out there that will give you tips on how to reduce your spending. Shop around. Don't be swayed by advertising to spend on name brand products when you don't have to. Invest in long term funds for retirement as early in life as possible. The future will be here before you know it. Take advantage of as many tax credits as you can: flex spend for medical expense, 401K or Roth Iras, educational credits, home purchase credits, home business credits, etc. Take at least 10% of your income off the top for savings. You won't miss it if you don't see it. Consider the value you receive from things you buy. Consider buying only things that will make you money rather than cost you money. Don't be swayed by the image of your purchases. You don't have to buy everything new. Buying on sale is great if you would have bought it off sale. Stick that savings into an account that you cannot readily access. Pay off credit cards by paying more than the minimums. Carpool when possible. Don't make unneccessary trips to stores. Shop with lists. Shop with coupons when possible. Don't spend every dime you make. You will need it tomorrow.

first step is set up a budget.
second step is follow it!

its hard, but sit down, with someone you know and trust if neccessary, and make a plan as to what you have to spend each week on food, housing, heat/electric bills, gas/car, etc. Then decide what you ought to save, and how much extra cash is left. There maybe some online spreadsheets to help you, check it out.

We had a big fight, hubby and I, because he thought I was wasting money. Once we put down on a spreadsheet all our expenses and his income, and my spending, he realized I wasnt out of control at all! We rarely go out to eat, I'm not a big shopper for clothes and stuff, and every little receipt goes into the budget. For now, alot of our 'extra' money goes to kids' college funds and retirement funds.

Right now I dont have any "free" spending cash, but soon as we are able, we are going to give each other say $20 a week "allowance" to spend and not be responsible for reporting it into the budget. Then I can go back to getting taco bell or kfc once a week, or some new clothes once a month.

decide what is REALLY neccessary in terms of your spending. thats where a friend can look at you and say 'you really DONT need to spend money on that'
