Were there any spies that worked to gain information to use AGAINST the Communists? I've read about McCarthyism and the fear America had of Soviet espionage, but was it vice-versa somewhat in Russia?

Ever heard of the CIA? That was their primary function until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the '80s.

Oh hell yeah. But the soviets do a much better job of eliminating them. Over here we have to go to court we have to give the press something to yammers about forever and then we send the jerks to prison or the death penalty if its bad enough. The soviets are much more efficient. Catch them, debrief them, kill them. They own the media, so the media can't print what it don't know about.

There is always espionage going on among nations, why do you think they all have spy agaencies within the government, some of which are only known to the elite of the elite in government?

The western countries wanted to know what was going on behind the iron curtain, so they sent in spies to find out.
