The second largest species of land mammal is the white rhino.
But, if you take the average size of all species of hippos and rhinos, hipopos come out on top, because some rhino species are pretty small.

a hippo is bigger, but what might make you think the other possibility is the fact that hippo don't have horns.

hippos are bigger by abit, and they are also the number one animal killer of people in africa (seriously! hippos kill more people than lions or elephants or anything!)
