I have a couple of gay friends. When they lived here, we went out a lot and I always had a lot of fun with them. (So much so that one night I peed my pants laughing! But that's another story.)
They moved out of state years ago, and I miss their company.
I remember that they hated to use the term "straight" when giving directions. If I would say something like, "You go straight at the stop sign and turn right at the second light," I would be "corrected" by one of them who would say, "Nope. You go FORWARD at the stop sign and turn right at the second light." Nothing was ever "straight ahead." It was always "forward and onward" or something like that.
Was this just some quirky nature of my friends, or do a lot of the gays and lesbians have this same idiosyncrasy?

They were teasing you some more. If I could get someone to wet their pants, I'd use more creativity in my humor as well.
Next time, say, "you go gay at the first light, homo at the second light", that should get them laughing. It'd be worth getting to your destination a little late...

I've been in a committed relationship with a woman for the last 11 years, so I suppose I qualify to answer... I try not to label myself or others, but the term straight doesn't bother me a bit. Neither does gay, lesbian, bi, etc. I guess that dyke and fag bother me unless the person is talking about him/herself. Anyhow, just my two cents. I suppose it varies person to person, so if someone says that it bothers them, then you'll know to use a different term with that person. I for one, love the company of gay men, too. They are often a blast to spend time with. Good luck!

I've heard people use it before, but I think that's more a little tease than anything. When some of my friends use it, they get a laugh. It isn't a no-no to say, but it is entertaining. My friend and I were bowling once, and I told him, "Just bowl straight." He replied, "Come on, I can't even THINK straight; How am I supposed to bowl straight?" It was a play on the term straight. There's lots of times when I've heard people use those little quips. It's just humor, plain and simple.

its a gay thing about straight. I used to have a friend who said" Never straight, gaily forward" so many times that I finally told him to get lost. .I mean a joke is only a joke the first 100 times then its a stupid cliche.

That was good hearted playfulness, that is all it was. The word Straight has no bad meanings to gays....when camping, we will say "go gayly forward," when correcting someone who says "go straight .... "

I think it was probably a quirk that your friends shared. I've never really even thought about it. I do like the responses you received where people use the term "gayly forward."

That's funny, it reminded me of my high school days when I smoked alot of pot and we used the term forward and never straight lolol....but that had nothing to do with gays or heterosexuals. I'm gay and don't smoke pot anymore. The term straight doesn't bother me.

I like to say gayly forward. But it's not serious, i use the term straight aswell. I guess it depends on the person. either way, you say it the way you want to say it.

My ex g/f used to yell at me for saying that while driving and i don't think its a big deal but now i say forward after being yelled at for saying it, it just stuck.

I have encountered the same situations. I mean we are ALREADY labeling human beings on their sexuality, now we are labeling directions?!?!? I think it stupid and immature!! The word "straight" is a word, like any other (like Brest, vagina, and clitoris) why make the hole deeper, then it already is, for homosexuals to be considered equal and human.
