It's easy to answer that question now. Of course not. But, if Justin Verlander had struck Pujols out, Jim Leyland would be a genius. A lot of factors were there to be considered.

The Tigers' starting pitcher, Verlander, won more games this season (17) than any pitcher in the National League.

The Cardinals hadn't won a World Series game against anybody in 19 years or won a road World Series game since 1985.

The Tigers had won seven postseason games in a row before this game, had won each of the last six by at least three runs, had outscored the Yankees and A's by a ridiculous 40-15, and had trailed after only nine of 63 innings.

And finally, there was Pujols. Remember all his home runs from that 2004 World Series? If you do, you're lying -- because he finished that Series with zero homers and zero RBI.

Personally, I would NEVER pitch to Pujols, under any circumstances, but it's easy to say that now.

Yes...simply b/c everyone overhypes what he does. Yeah he came up big but even as good as he is he fails 65.9% of the time and he only hits a HR 9.1% of the time. Odds are in the pitchers favor. In saying that you cannot lose to their best player, that just makes you a bad coach. But it wasnt Pujols who won that game, he just gets the hype for no freakin reason, it was Anthony Reyes.

I would almost never pitch to him unless he was in a big slump.
