I have to write an essay agreeing or disagreeing with the following prompt . "Freedom isn't free. It passes on an enormous debt to the recipient." I agree with this but am having trouble thinking up enough arguments for it since I have to use supporting details for my opinion and refute opposing arguments. Opinions and web sites would be appreciated, serious answers only please.

I'd have to say I agree, freedom is not free.

1 - there are always people around you who will want to control you. Nazis, Al Quaeda, etc and if you let them, they will take all your freedoms from you. so you have to be willing to fight to keep yourself safe.

2 - to live in a free society, we all have to make sacrifices. we have to pay taxes to have police to protect us. we have to obey the laws of the land so everyone is respected. if we had no structure or laws, the strong would take advantage of the weak.

3 - if we were to completely leave society and be "free" on our own, we would have to work very hard. we would have no hospitals, no 911, none of the benefits society offers. so we have to make compromises to stay in the freedom and safety of an organized culture. we have to work at a job, pay rent for our homes, etc to be included in society.

Freedom Is Not Free Essay

The topic is cliche in of itself, poorly expressed. There are obviously two paths, and agreement or a disagreement. Supporting arguments would range from the Revolutionary War, to present day war on terrorism. You might even want to explore how the Roman Republic became a "democracy" by deposing the old kings with violence.

The cost of freedom is the blood of the people who fought for it. That to me is a high cost not only for the individual, but the family left behind.

Remember that on Memorial Day.
