All fish need oxygen. Oxygen enters the water through the surface, not from the bubbles an airstone makes, when the bubbles pop at the surface is allows the gases to escape and lets the oxygen in. Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each so adding an air pump wont do anything to save the fishes life. A filter is better at this since is causes good surface agitation, it also cleans the tank.

It will help aerate the water and keep the water oxygenated for your fish, which is a good thing. If the bowl has a very small opening on top, it's a very good idea. If you have a large surface area on top for water/air transfer, then you probably don't need one. Just be sure to keep your water clean.

A very small air pump with an airstone would be fine. Dont overfeed the fish.. Bowl fish should be fed very, very minimal. Perhaps every other day.

Just change the water often (or put a mini filter in), because goldfish are very messy.
